Vauxhall workers kept waiting

Thursday 28th May 2009

Thousands of Vauxhall workers are no closer to finding out who will become the carmaker's new owners after all-night talks broke down.

The discussions were hoping to decide on which firm will buy Vauxhall's parent company GM Europe.

Two of those bidding have claimed they will cut European jobs, threatening UK workers.

The German government had been due to announce its preferred bidder for the European arm of the struggling General Motors yesterday, but the country's finance minister Peer Steinbrueck said there had been "unpleasant surprises".

There are just two bidders left in the discussions – Fiat and Canadian-Austrian car parts firm Magna, with the former admitting it will cut thousands of jobs.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson said he had received "categorical assurances" that Vauxhall production would continue in the UK but acknowledged jobs could be lost.

Tony Woodley, joint secretary of the union Unite, told Sky News Lord Mandelson should be in Germany offering government money to secure British jobs.ADNFCR-1783-ID-19189886-ADNFCR
